The Sisterhood of the Dress: Why This Bride Chose a Pre-Loved Vivienne Westwood Icon

There is a certain magic in a wedding dress that has already seen a dance floor. It carries the echoes of a previous celebration, the luck of a happy day, and the soul of the designers who crafted it.

At Something Borrowed, we believe the most beautiful thing a bride can wear is a story. Today, we’re sharing the story of one of our lenders, who recently listed her breathtaking Vivienne Westwood gown (complete with that iconic Galaxy Cape) on our platform.

We sat down with her to talk about why she chose pre-loved, the practical magic of Westwood draping, and why she’s passing the torch to the next Something Borrowed bride.

Finding "The One" (Again)

Why did you choose a pre-loved Vivienne Westwood dress, and what excites you about passing it on?

"I always knew I wanted Vivienne Westwood," she tells us. "The Galaxy Cape was an easy decision the moment I tried it on. What surprised me most, though, was how comfortable it was. The signature Westwood draping around the stomach means you aren't restricted. Plus, the cape is detachable, so you can actually sit down and enjoy your wedding breakfast without thinking twice!"

For this bride, the appeal wasn't just the label—it was the history. "I loved that the dress already had a life before mine, and now it gets another one. It feels very Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants."

Choosing Sustainability Over the Scissors

Why did you decide to sell your dress through Something Borrowed?

Many brides struggle with what to do with their gown after the big day. "I considered reworking it - cutting it into a separate corset or maybe dyeing it - but it wouldn't have been the same dress. It felt right to pass it on exactly as it is. I wanted someone else to be able to wear something they love at a price that feels a bit more realistic."

By listing with Something Borrowed, she’s ensuring the craftsmanship of Westwood lives on, rather than sitting in a box at the back of a wardrobe.

The Moment the Vision Came to Life

What was your favourite moment of the day?

"The ceremony, without question," she says, "but honestly, walking in wearing the dress runs it close. There is something about finally being in it, on the actual day, that feels completely different to any fitting. I hadn't fully appreciated how the cape would move until I was actually walking down the aisle in it."

Advice for the Modern Bride

Do you have any tips for those currently planning their wedding?

"Buy secondhand! I got almost all my accessories pre-loved or on rental, and it made absolutely no difference to how anything looked on the day."

And her best piece of advice for the day itself? Let go of perfection. "Try not to grip the day too tightly. I was late because of traffic—it happens! Something will always go slightly off-script, and that’s fine. The day goes by so quickly regardless, so you’re better off being in it than trying to manage it."
