Most brides should book a wedding dress rental around six to eight months before the wedding, and reserve the exact dates three to four months out. That is the sweet spot: early enough to have the full collection open to you, late enough that your size and your taste have settled. If your wedding is sooner than that, do not panic. Rental is the one route to a beautiful gown that can still work with a few weeks' notice.
Almost every wedding dress timeline you will read online is written for buying. Made to order gowns need five or six months in the atelier, so boutiques quite reasonably tell you to start twelve to eighteen months out. Renting does not work like that. The dress already exists, it is hanging in our studio, and the only thing standing between you and it is the calendar. Here is how to plan it properly.
Why six to eight months is the honest answer
We could tell you to book eighteen months ahead. It would fill the diary nicely. It would also be untrue, and it would have you choosing a dress for a version of yourself that has not happened yet.
Six to eight months gives you three things that actually matter. You get the widest choice, because the designer gowns that everyone wants, the Vivienne Westwood, the Pronovias, the sculptural Oui The Label pieces, do get reserved first for peak Saturdays in June, July and September. You get a calm run at the home try-on rather than a scramble. And you get a realistic read on your own body and your own venue, which almost never survives a booking made two years out.
Book much earlier than that and you are not gaining much. Book much later and you are simply choosing from what is left, which is still a lovely selection, just a smaller one.
Your month by month rental timeline
A workable shape for a 2026 wedding, counting backwards from the day.
Nine to twelve months out. Browse, save, and work out what you are drawn to. No commitment, no appointments, no pressure. Look at the bridal collection the way you would look at a mood board, and notice what you keep returning to. Most brides are surprised by their own answer.
Six to eight months out. This is the booking window. Narrow it to three or four gowns and get them on your body. A home try-on is £75, runs for four days, and is redeemable against your rental, so trying properly costs you nothing in the end if you go on to rent. Four days at home, in your own light, in front of the people whose opinion you actually want, tells you more than an hour under boutique spotlights ever will.
Four to six months out. Confirm the gown and lock in your rental dates. Sort your bridesmaids in the same breath, because a party of five takes longer to align than one bride does.
Two to three months out. Shoes, veil, jewellery, hair trial. This is when the whole look stops being a dress and starts being an outfit.
The wedding week. Your gown arrives cleaned, pressed and ready, ahead of the day itself. You wear it. You put it back in the bag with the prepaid returns label. We handle the dry cleaning. That is genuinely the end of your involvement.
What if your wedding is in a few weeks?
Then rental is very probably your best option, and possibly your only good one. A made to order gown cannot be conjured in six weeks. A rental can, because the dress is already made.
We have dressed brides on four weeks' notice, brides who had a dress that no longer fitted, brides whose boutique order arrived wrong, and brides who decided in March that they were getting married in May and saw no reason to wait. Short notice narrows the choice, it does not remove it. Message us with your date and your size before you assume it is impossible, because it usually is not. If the timeline is very tight, we can often compress the try-on so it sits closer to the day, or send the gown straight out to a bride who already knows exactly what she wants.
Bridesmaids, veils and the rest of the party
Bridesmaids need longer than you would think, not because the dresses take time but because the humans do. Five people, five sizes, five opinions, five diaries. Start the bridesmaid conversation around five months out and you will avoid the group chat that goes quiet for a fortnight and then panics.
Veils and accessories are the opposite. They are the last piece, and they should be, because a veil is chosen against the gown, not before it. Two to three months out is plenty. It is also the easiest place to add something borrowed without adding anything to a landfill.

There is a version of wedding planning that treats early booking as virtue and late booking as failure. We do not really believe in it. Give yourself a real window, use it, and then stop. Renting from around £20, against designer gowns that retail anywhere from £1,500 to £6,000 and beyond, means the decision carries less weight than a purchase does. You are borrowing something beautiful for the days you need it and passing it on to the next bride, rather than paying to store a memory in a box under the bed.
